Is my neck alignment normal?

Logan Jenkins • Apr 19, 2023

What shape should your neck be?

Constant computer sitting, talking on the phone (with the phone on your shoulder shrugged), injury, whiplash in accidents, carrying a heavy backpack or even just being sedentary with improper posture can all affect neck curvature and alter its normalcy. Ever thought of what is considered proper neck alignment? Or how to even achieve ideal spinal alignment? Our daily lives take a toll on the appropriate curvature in our necks.

The average human spine has three distinct curves that allow for efficient energy to flow freely in communication with nerves in the body. When the spine is at its best, limbs and organs function flawlessly. When there is spinal damage or misalignment, as with the neck, the rest of the body can also be negatively impacted.

The neck curve, or cervical lordosis, protects the neck from damage, reduces stress and strain and transmits signals to the rest of the body. Proper alignment of the neck should resemble a backward “C” – similar to the “C” shape of a banana. This neck curve allows for correct motion, including flexion and extension with health range of motion.

If the cervical curve is lost, the neck can resemble a straight line, with bones stacked vertically. Neck curve can also reverse, a mirror opposite of a healthy cervical spine. These ailments can cause neck pain, a stiff neck or more serious and painful complications and conditions.

Chiropractic Care is the best remedy.

The best solution is a safe and effective spinal adjustment. Visiting your chiropractor is the best way to realignment your neck towards perfection. A corrective care chiropractor can not only return your cervical curve to the ideal position, but also help keep it in place with postural exercises and thoughtful lifelong care.
